The Portland Sea Dogs are changing their name to the Maine Whoopie Pies! My son, who lives in Portland, broke the bad news to me about the Sea Dogs, who are the minor league affiliate of the Red Sox. I was dumbfounded; crazy thoughts ran through my head. In my book, this would be like changing the Boston Red Sox to the Boston Cream Pies. Think of the headlines- New York Yankees Squish the Boston Cream Pies. N.Y coach comments on the easy victory. “It was a cakewalk.” Boston coach responds, “Our players are not hustling. They are getting soft in the middle.” I could go on, but don’t worry, I won’t.
The Maine Whoopie Pies even have a mascot. It is a whoopie pie with a fierce face swinging a bat. How scary is one of these crumbly batters to an opposing pitcher? I guess they would be intimidating for those who are on a diet.
A little research quelled my fears. Yes, the Sea Dogs are changing their name to the Maine Whoopie Pies-for one day. On June 21st, the Sea Dogs will celebrate the official state treat of Maine by wearing specialty hats and jerseys. Prior to the game there will be a whoopie pie eating contest. Fans will also get the chance to win complementary passes to the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in June.
So mark your calendars and celebrate the arrival of summer (happy thought). Get a prime seat behind home plate and enjoy the game. Don’t forget to bring your whoopee cushion!
