All Saints Day is coming soon!
Several years ago, I met a young man, Alex Dee, and his wife Melissa, both friends of my son. At the time, he had finished work on a major documentary film on Father Patrick Peyton. He also was working on a side project called Saints Alive, a radio drama podcast for kids on the lives of the saints.
My husband and I began listening to the podcast and were captivated by the high quality of the production, including the sound effects. Alex has an extensive library of sound effects ranging from the crunch of footsteps on gravel to the sound of galloping horses.
How was Alex brought to this project?
He explains, “When I was 11 years old, I went to the movie theater to see the Lord of the Rings. Walking out that day, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I was going to make stories to bring people to Christ.”
After a discouraging stint as a Hollywood actor, Alex was ready to give up his childhood dream. He was now married and ready to start a family.
Alex wrote about his dilemma. “I asked God to take my dreams away from me, but He wouldn’t. I asked Him to show me the way, and He did.”
With the help of his wife and friend Tanner, they launched Saints Alive. After two years of production, the radio drama was picked up by Hallow, the #1 Catholic App, followed by millions. It is now his full-time job.
Saints Alive has a vast collection of captivating, even thrilling, stories of Catholic saints. My husband and I recently listened to the production on Blessed Stanley Rother, a Catholic priest from Oklahoma who was martyred in Guatemala in the 1980’s.
Saints Alive also has resources like coloring books and music.
I recommend that you check out Saints Alive. Both you and your children will be inspired by the courageous witness of our holy friends in heaven, all part of the communion of saints.
