Today is the memorial of our Guardian Angels, a day in which we honor those spiritual beings who protect us in powerful and mysterious ways. How do I know? Well, the Church tells us so, but I also have a story to tell of how my guardian angel saved my life. You can read about it here.

I would like to tell you about another miraculous intervention by a guardian angel. It is told by Father Karl Goldmann, OFM in his book The Shadow of his Wings, published by Ignatius Press.
Inspired by this exciting true story, I introduced Father Goldmann and other WWII heroes to young readers in my book Perilous Days. On page 100, we read how a guardian angel saved Father Goldmann’s life. Trapped behind enemy lines, Goldmann hears a strange voice warning him of impeding danger.
” I heard a voice. It sounded like a man’s voice echoing in a canyon.
“Wake up and dig. Do it now!” said the voice.
…Eyes from another world were watching us. On this peaceful starlit night, a voice from beyond had a message for us. “Don’t be fooled. something big is about to happen. Something bad. Dig for your lives!”
St. Basil wrote, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.”
Let it be known the guardian angels are not just for kids. They are not fairy tale characters. A guardian angel saved my life and the life of Father Goldmann. Tune in to your angel’s voice, even as that angel guides us in little and big ways. You might be surprised at what you hear.
